Is it just me, or are ancient historians wildly over represented in Classics public outreach efforts? It seems like looking at projects like @AncientWorldMag or @AncientSave that ancient historians are present to a far greater degree than our proportion in the field?

@AncientWorldMag these thoughts are in no way representative of my colleagues or any of our authors. But, since you highlighted us in the first Tweet I thought it worth saying something here. (1/?) -
Firstly, I don't really understand your point in this thread. I assume it is just the first sentence which claims "ancient historians" are overrepresented in public-facing spaces compared to "other" types of ancient Mediterranean studies folks. (2/?)

i have a theory that it's because ancient historians might feel like they're the ones closest to doing 'classics' proper.. ancient historians *usually * have languages, history, and varying quantities of archaeology, literature, epigraphy, etc...

Rough and order-of-magnitude estimation is a standard tool in modeling the ancient world, e.g. in demography, economy, etc. I'm clear about my uncertainty and the source of my estimate - it follows the size of the US prof. associations, SCS is larger than AIA is larger than AAH.

It is hard to say. It does seem that of the popular magazine publications (Ancient Warfare, Ancient World etc., focus on history. Archaeology certainly has its own appeal, although usually more broadly: Archaeology Magazine and Nat. Geo. which both often/

feature ancient stuff. Still, its telling that the AIA has a very successful public outreach venue in Archaeology, while the SCS's attempt to do the same, Amphora, was an embarrassing failure. Eidolon, also defunct, might have served as an outlet/
