Is it just me, or are ancient historians wildly over represented in Classics public outreach efforts? It seems like looking at projects like @AncientWorldMag or @AncientSave that ancient historians are present to a far greater degree than our proportion in the field?
Which is also pretty true when you are thinking in terms of the Classicists who have national or international profiles - for better or worse - mostly ancient historians. I wonder if that's the public-facing nature of the field of history coming through?
I don't have statistics to back this up, but my sense is that Classics as a field is probably around 40% philology, 35% archaeology and maybe 15% ancient history (with the rest epigraphy, paleography, papyrology, etc.)? Just going from conferences, etc.
A bit curious about this wording, when you say "public outreach efforts", what exactly does that entail? Would one place television programs like ones the History channel used to air in that category? Or are you talking more organizational fundraisers and the like? Cheers.
