The first full year for ACOUP (https://acoup.blog/ ) saw 53 new posts and a little over 1,900,000 views. ACOUP averaged c. 46,500 unique visitors a month. I know view-counting can seem crass, but can't do public engagement history if you don't engage some of the public! 2/8

On ACOUP, I think my favorite essay of the year was The Practical Case on Why We Need the Humanities (https://acoup.blog/2020/07/03/collections-the-practical-case-on-why-we-need-the-humanities/ …). This year especially, with funding cuts and the job market deep freeze, I think humanistic disciplines of all stripes need to be rethinking... 6/8

...how we engage the public. It isn't enough for us to retreat into our academic monasteries. We must convince the broad public - inc. many who won't ever take our classes - the field has value, or else we are lost. "In any event, that is what we are going to try to do." 7/8

And that was 2020. I approach 2021, honestly, with high hopes, but low expectations - I think the wounds 2020 dealt to academia will be longer in healing than most seem to expect. But nowhere else to go but forward, so 2021, here we come! end/8
