To be clear, @sentantiq here seems to me quite clearly to be advocating that 'yes...and...' approach to canon formation.
Of course reading time and thus space in the canon is essentially scarce and so for things to rise in, others must fall out.

But I think trying to demolish parts of the cannon is counter productive (not being done here) - often ends up merely diminishing the perceived value of the whole edifice in the minds of the public, with a negative overall impact on the prestige and thus study of the humanities.

Years ago I read an article by scholar of German lit. about the canon at schools (we don't have colleges) & found a lifespan of ca. 250 yrs for most works - my grandparents generation still read the poem "Die Glocke" (memorized it), we didn't have it in school books anymore.
