In any event, I don't allow holocaust denial in my comments, I don't see why I'd allow holodomor denial. Anyway, the USSR was bad, folks! Stalin too, also quite bad! Communist regimes in general - totalitarian, violent and bad!
But the US did some bad guy things, so the people on the other side *must* be the good guys, right? Right?
It's a tough lesson for a lot of people to learn: conflict doesn't mean there's a goodguy and a badguy. Sometimes everyone can be horrible (see Hitler vs. Stalin).
To be fair, the idea that Stalin's USSR was a qualitatively lesser evil than Hitler's Germany shouldn't really be controversial as such, and "double genocide theory" has a pretty clear historical lineage from anti-Semitism and Holocaust denialism on the Eastern European far right
There comes a point where 'what was the worst mass-murdering hell-regime' is not a useful question. Was Allied decision to side w/ USSR against Nazis correct? Yes, absolutely. But, given the scale of the inhumanity of the USSR, I hesitate to put it in a 'lesser evil' category.
Do you have any sympathy for the argument that the USSR was foundered in the hope of a better world and went off the rails like all violent revolutions do? That some aspects of the USSR was good but tainted or was it wholey bad?
I think my response to this would be that there wasn't ever a mechanism for the USSR to do good. Lenninism never had any mechanism to incentivize people in power to use that power against their own interests. It just assumed leaders nebulously "chosen by the people" would act-
At the same time, the colonial empires of Britain, France, Portugal and Belgium were very, very kind! It is for this reason that the heirs of the capital, honestly earned by these countries in the colonies, have the right and duty to judge and punish the whole world.
