This is totally why I'm not even bothering with a career in academia. I have serious multi-year research interests and I'm just going to do them in my spare time, while having a private sector job. I'll probably have an easier time doing real research than most academics.
I feel this so keenly. There's not only the time and energy wasted on job applications every year, but also the way that the job market forces a near-future orientation to research. Of course, I'm a math major and don't need university resources to do my thing. Must be much harder for ppl who need access to specialized resources such as labs, archives, or human research subjects.
