Oh no. It's rare I have to step in via moderation at all, save for filtering bot spam. I think I've had to nuke only maybe a dozen truly bad comments (out of the c. 6,000 or so on the blog), and half of those were from one guy who didn't get how moderation works.
Mind you, I often disagree - sometimes quite strongly - with my commenters. And there are often impassioned debates in the comments. But my rules for the comments are more or less my rules for a class discussion - I'll let 'edgy' arguments fly if they're in good faith.
I have had to lean in to one or two debates to ask everyone to cool down just a bit, but those were cases where the line was being approached, not crossed. But I will shut down outright trolling, open bigotry, or direct ad hominem attacks right away. No place for that.
