Isn't the book review a genre that, like the eulogy or the college commencement address, has a narrow putative function but a rich tradition of being used as a pretext for other, broader purposes? or is that only so for general book reviews, with academic reviews more focused?
Academic reviews tend to be more focused and have a fairly standard organization. They're also very important for untenured academics, because they go into tenure files, so a review that is incoherent or off-topic can harm the original book's author's career.
ah. yes, that makes a great deal of sense. by analogy, I would hate to be relying on a standard commencement address for professional purposes and then to find that I had been given the Marshall Plan instead, no matter how much I appreciate the Marshall Plan.
