I am of the view that folks who don't want to write that elegantly functional, but creatively limited review shouldn't, and should instead go write something else, somewhere else. Editors who would rather edit that something else should also do so. Somewhere else. 2/3
But a review should tell me 1) what the book is about, 2) its organization, argument and themes, 3) the sort of evidence it mobilizes, 4) the degree to which it succeeds at its aims and 5) exactly who the reviewer thinks might benefit from it. Nothing more, nothing less. 3/3
Isn't the book review a genre that, like the eulogy or the college commencement address, has a narrow putative function but a rich tradition of being used as a pretext for other, broader purposes? or is that only so for general book reviews, with academic reviews more focused?
Academic reviews tend to be more focused and have a fairly standard organization. They're also very important for untenured academics, because they go into tenure files, so a review that is incoherent or off-topic can harm the original book's author's career.
Worth noting the exceptional cases when a genius writes a review which is important in its own right and goes beyond these basics Accordingly, some reviewers' liberalities seem to reflect an over-estimation of their own importance

I found myself thinking about this when looking at reviews of Dr Neil Price's latest book. Some were... better reviews than others.
I think I don't agree. I can imagine two books which, for instance, both present a 'modernist' model of Italian agriculture using mostly archaeological evidence, but one is new scholarship for a technical audience and one summarizes existing scholarship for a lay audience.
