@BretDevereaux I love the (Drink!) every time you mention Clausewitz in your posts. We literally said the same thing in Professional Military Education.
The joke isn't original to me! I recall first hearing it in @MilHist_Lee's grad seminar in milhist (a drinking game to get plastered with at the SMH), though I do not remember who made the joke first.
I have to imagine that same joke has been floating in mil-ed circles for ages.

New(ish) topic, have you written about support functions in middle ages vs modern day. I deployed to Iraq, and at that time it was said there 21 support troops for every soldier outside the wire. That seems unsustainable in the "olden" days. I'll bet you've written about it.

There were VERY few specifically logistical troops in any pre-modern army. Particularly as enrolled soldiers. Civilian contractors or even just merchants provided a lot of log support (sutlers). So doing a ratio analysis doesn't really work.
