I'd say it looks better on a CV to have the range, same with presenting at different conferences rather than the same one over and over. I think I've seen some journals discourage submitting multiple articles at a time (although if one is accepted you can send a further one)
Question for #twitterstorians - publishing in the same journal twice in a row seems rare, looking at CVs...
Why? Is it just that it's rare to have 2 projects with the same ideal venue? Or an issue of demonstrating range? Journals not wanting to publish the same person too often?

I've been told by multiple people (though all UK-based) that having things in multiple journals "looks better" than only publishing in one journal. How much of this is old-fashioned academic derpery, I don't know.

One reason might be that you'd reach different audiences if you publish in multiple journals?

Not a historian, but I would add that this IMHO is rare in other fields as well and part of the reason IMHO boils down to the pure randomness of both the peer review process and quality of the work of an academic... In life sciences it would be hard even if it was your only goal.

For me, it's primarily that different projects have different audiences. But more generally, it has the advantage of spreading the risk - if a publisher folds or gets delayed (cough, cough, Ashgate, cough, cough) other things in the pipeline can still move forward & be published.

There is definitely an professional advantage to consciously trying to place pieces with different journals: it shows you can pass muster with different editors and reviewers, can provide some disciplinary variety, and also some international span 1/

given in our fields its pretty easy to hit US/UK/Canada, Germany just by submitting to various pretty standard journals. But for bean-counters, that's international! And you really never know who will care about what: the classicist might respect CQ/CP 2/
