You really should have asked me for the draft of my work on native and mongol logistics! But I say that before reading....so here we go

I've just read Part I and Part II and I have to admit I'm struggling with this series. On the one hand, yes, this is all very interesting information and per usual I'm enjoying learning. On the other hand, something about the tone feels a little unfair to GRRM.

I'm an enormous ASOIAF fan, I should acknowledge, but I never took any of his cultural portrayals to be an attempt at hyper-realistic medieval fantasy, and if you think that's what he's holding all this out to be, I wish you'd supported it with more GRRM quotes.

Not entirely certain how accurate this source is, but... here's someone claiming that the Native Americans did, in fact, have horses prior to the arrival of the Spanish.https://indiancountrytoday.com/news/yes-world-there-were-horses-in-native-culture-before-the-settlers-came-JGqPrqLmZk-3ka-IBqNWiQ …

Just to clarify, when you talk about modern horses and destriers being so much larger than Steppe horses, are you think of destriers being over 16hh? Because most medieval war horses were 14-15hh, or not far off the mustang heights you gave.

The Steppe heights he gives are even lower than mustangs, though

Thanks, this was really eye-opening on how much written accounts of villagers attacked by mongols still shape image of male mongol riders, bc the village back at home wasn't described. Mongols driving sheep or milking a mare doesn't sound badass, but is practical.
Kiitos. Käytämme tätä aikajanasi parantamiseen. KumoaKumoa
