Also on this topic: citation systems that include place of publication, but not publisher, are such strange nonsense to me. If I want to locate the exact right book, publisher is *far* more useful than knowing where this book was published.
Especially given that for any particular language, there's usually one or two cities which are the place of publication for the vast majority of scholarly books.
Oh, come on! You just need to know which cathedral library town to travel to to get your copy made! ;)
APA style just ditched place of publication. For all books barring well-known specialty presses, I just flipped a coin: heads NYC, tails London.
Even worse now that many publishers now have multiple places of publication: Boston/Leiden, Oxford/New York, etc.
This really is an 17th century convention, like you need to travel to a specific city to hunt down one of the ten copies made by a specific printer.
I'd just like to know why academic citation still mostly leaves off ISBNs, despite having been useful for decades.
