So, academic twitter - is there a good primer on getting image permissions for use in an peer reviewed article? Is that done before submission or after? Would you need to redo the process if a paper is rejected and submitted to a different journal?

In my experience, it can be a nightmare to navigate. Many journals use Copyright Clearance Center, but all seem to want diff info and it can be frustrating when the form doesn't have the appropriate questions for what you want.

you may well know this already, but AFAIK, you should avoid asking permission unless you know it really doesn't fall under fair use; the very act of asking is forfeiture of fair use protection
