With you guys! Things are better, but only marginally so for ancient history and it's grim. UNC has a great medieval PhD program, so I know folks out in that miserable medieval job market. It frustrates me - we need more pre-modern in our history departments, not less!!
It drives me bonkers to see departments hiring for their nth+1 modern Europe or America line when they have at best one or two poor pre-modernists (focused on Europe) covering <<the beginning of time>> to 1550 all on their own.
Imagine what wonderful courses you could teach in a department that committed itself to being 1/3 modern europe/america, 1/3 modern not-europe, and 1/3 pre-modern!
