This is a serious question. What is the point of academic book reviews? Who is the audience? Who reads them? *Are* they read?

I skim them in my field’s and subfield’s flagship journals to get a sense of things. I’m in an interdisciplinary department/school and don’t have nearly as much time for reading “history” as I would like.
Well and in my field, at least, we also have a proliferation of 'companion' volumes and volumes that are collections of papers. One can't read them all and so reviews describing their contents so you know which ones to read are important.
