Wild that 4+ years wasn't enough! I switched majors to history+classics late in college, so only had 2 yrs of Ltn and 1 of Grk when I applied to ancient history grad programs... & definitely got some hard rejections from some progs (& definitely still not awesome at languages)

It seemed like being on year 3 of Greek but year 1 of Latin was viewed more negatively than if it had been the other way around. But I also only looked at programs offering full fellowships b/c there was no way I could afford anything else.
I had four years of high school Latin, 2 years of undergraduate Latin, 1 year of undergraduate Greek, 6 semesters of graduate Greek and 4 semesters of graduate Latin before I got a PhD program to take me seriously. And it was still in a history department.

And I know that, having the PhD in a history department still means that a lot of my job applications are DOA because "well but can he teach the languages!?"

Yeah exactly--I've gotten to the point where I don't look at many classics jobs (since my PhD is from a history dept). And I did high school history teaching the last few years, which also doesn't make my languages look great.
