Honestly, the quilted leather pseudo-armor bothers me less than the consistent tendency to reduce non-western cultures to 'barbaric' leathers when what they actually wore was colorful and wonderful and humanizing. Also, long, bright robes are not prohibitive costumes!
Indeed but as you note, historical fantasy (or for that matter SF) ends up being less about the reality of that time, than what we project onto it. I really love when a novel, film, game works in inconvenient or unexpected material about its source. Great essay!
