It would appear that the nature of Xi (and similar ppl's) survival of the CR broke them in the direction of being fanatically loyal to their vision of the CCP, and it has instilled in them a similar tendency to rigid and inflexible beliefs.

Similar in that all institutions like that - and especially something like the cultural revolution - have a shaping effect on perspectives and narrowly shaped perspectives can make for mistakes in leadership. I don't have the expertise to say if the two shaped in the same way.

The language that the China experts I've read or listened to use seem to mimic your own. It's what I observed in Bougon's book on Xi, and in a number of interviews of China experts. Perhaps these experts are not entirely representative (I don't know), but it's what I've noticed.

I mean, a lot of the Party elite *were* effectively conscripted as semi-soldiers during their teenage years as part of the CR, and used as *very* violent enforcers of Mao's party line. That has something in common, I think, with the Agoge, especially the helot-murdering bit.
