I use podcasts as background noise to chill while playing slow-paced games like Paradox strategy titles. I find that works out. But them I am an odd fellow.
I hardly ever play video games anymore but for the most part I would never do it with the sound off. Otherwise I am pretty much 100% of the time either reading (lyrical music is out, listening to new music is pointless) or watching something.
