Presumably someone, at some point, has gone through film history and compiled the various visual signifiers of 'barbarians' (the random furs, lots of leather, facial hair, etc) origins/implications/etc? Don't suppose anyone has bibliography on that handy?

If you are thinking of the leather bracers, chest-straps and jerkins that show up in TV or film, I'm afraid you've been mislead by Hollywood. Roman clothing was made out of wool and linen. Occasionally silk for the rich. Not very much hide or leather used at all.
