Presumably someone, at some point, has gone through film history and compiled the various visual signifiers of 'barbarians' (the random furs, lots of leather, facial hair, etc) origins/implications/etc? Don't suppose anyone has bibliography on that handy?
If you could track it down, that might be almost exactly perfect for what I need!

I looked through Against the Grain and Art of Not Being Governed and couldn't find it. There's some stuff about leather and fur goods being traded to states, but nothing about them as markers of barbarism.

As you might expect, Against the Grain does talk about both the Romans and Chinese describing barbarians as eating (sometimes raw) meat instead of grain
