It sure feels like it should exist, though, right?

I feel like I read something by James C Scott about this but I can't remember where. I think it was something about "barbarian" leather and furs vs "civilized" linen and cotton. I guess that's not very useful!

If you could track it down, that might be almost exactly perfect for what I need!

Even the etymology of barbarian is pretty funny: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbarian#Etymology …. I imagine that all random fur people sound like “bar bar bar”.

I'd gotten the impression that this was specifically for German speakers, and for this we have the tale of Rhubarb Barbara:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3_tRPRt9x8 …

Tim Newark did have a book on barbarians in the 80s that played into notions present at the time. It might be a start? Here's the Goodreads link:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/521907.The_Barbarians# …

"Powerful facial hair = barbarian" is right out of Roman sources. IIRC Romans always made a point of being clean-shaven, whereas Celts went in for the fancy head and facial hair.

Similarly, is there anything more quintessentially barbarian than butchering an animal and wearing its skin around for warmth?
