Greek hoplits, Macedonian phalangites, Roman legionaries - none of them seem to have knelt their front ranks. I think some of the combined arms infantry techniques of the Han may have involved kneeling, but my knowledge is thin on the ground on that point, so I could be wrong.
Seeking authority here.
So did it happen at all? Yes. Was it common in a wide range of time periods? My sense is 'no.'

Interesting, thanks for responding! The game is medieval Europe oriented (focusing on XIV century now). The friend who I've been discussing it with suggested that the only mention of late medieval pikemen kneeling in battle is to allow the archers behind them to shoot. WDYT?

I would have to see the reference. Early modern pike drills kneel in formation to receive a cavalry charge, not for missile troops. I am not familiar with kneeling for archer fire though and what we know of archer deployments doesn't generally suggest it.
