Kneeling in formations, hot or not? Historical friends say it's a no no and that it should be a proper arrest like this https://imgur.com/a/0K1CiLh #medieval #rts #UE4pic.twitter.com/i4UZvt8cI6

So did it happen at all? Yes. Was it common in a wide range of time periods? My sense is 'no.'
Interesting, thanks for responding! The game is medieval Europe oriented (focusing on XIV century now). The friend who I've been discussing it with suggested that the only mention of late medieval pikemen kneeling in battle is to allow the archers behind them to shoot. WDYT?
Also someone just popped this onto our Discord, supposedly a reenacment of a Byzantian anti cav formationpic.twitter.com/xvl3SvIDMZ
Without a clear primary source attestation, I'd be cautious about using reenactors as evidence. In this case for instance, this 'Byzantine' formation is equipped with a mix of high imperial and late imperial Roman kit, most of which is clearly wrong.
