There is, in my opinion, plenty of excellent Christmas music, which makes it all the more impressive how committed American retailers and radio stations are to playing exclusively the ghastliest shit all season

The fact that Jingle Bell Rock is the universal TV/Movie music motif to signal 'this is Christmas' is absolutely terrible. I assume that this is from a desire to avoid more explicitly religious carols?

Oh, I think the effort to avoid 'religious' carols is silly in and of itself. We live in a society deeply permeated with religious expression, often in beautiful art. Who are we fooling by pretending it isn't so? Also, Jingle Bells Rock sucks terribly, so there's that.
