I think the jump from the early empire to the mid-republic isn't so hard - you are mostly doing the same things with different sources. Late Antiquity, I feel like, is more different. I'd make sure, if you want to do Late, that your advisor does late.
Yeah, I mostly work on the Middle Republic. It's funny, I went into my program expecting to focus on the early empire, but then I stumbled on a Mid-Rep dissertation topic and here we are.
