Contingency: A general term but also an important historical concept that historical events, social structures or anything else might be dependent on (read: contingent) on other events, structures, etc., such that 'it needn't have been so.' Antonyms: Necessary; Inevitable.
So contingency would be ... the opposite of "If Archduke Ferninand wasn't assassinated, WWI would still have happened?"
Right. A historian might argue that WWI was 'contingent' - that without the exciting event (the assassination) it would not have happened. On the flip side, historians have argued for a less contingent WWI - that by, say, 1910 or so, the war had become 'inevitable.'
Both seem very straightforward, and pretty much exactly what I’d have guessed had I encountered them. Kind of baffled anyone would call that jargon, but I guess I’m probably overly desensitized to jargon from time spent in pure mathematics.
