Bah, those are just technical terms. A good technical term is a sentence-length idea compressed into a single word. Any halfway decent historian ought to be able to define both of those things to a lay-person fairly easily.

You know you are looking at jargon and cant when the term cannot be defined for a lay-person, when it is only available to those initiated into the 'mysteries.'

Exactly. Contingency as cant? I just can't. "Tory History" here sounds fairly close to "historical fiction"
