The C&C remaster reminding me of things you could do in the wild-west days of game design that you could probably not get away with now: a mission where the briefing is garbled, so the actual objective is concealed.

Yeah. The stupid AI, the lackluster balancing, the awkward mission design...My nostalgia just didn't carry me through. I chuckled through the mission briefing, but...simply not enough.
To be fair, I really hope what they remaster is Tiberium Sun, which has always been my favorite entry in the series, with a unique aesthetic and the game that I thought best committed to the Nod/GDI asymmetry.

It was also a huge disappointment even back in 1999 :( Second only to Black&White, I guess.

Out of curiosity, did you ever play Supreme Commander?

Yes, and the sequel, and the spiritual successor Planetary Annihilation. The original is the strongest of the bunch and it is striking how the subsequent efforts weren't really able to recapture that.
