Mayors digging their heels in this absurdly over cop stuff has led to widespread speculation that they think their families might be in legitimate danger but I don't feel like the Restaurant Association has Lori's kid hostage or anythinghttps://twitter.com/royalpratt/status/1331628304999342085 …

Huh. On the one hand, I get the financial bind that local and state governments are under re: closing down bars and restaurants. On the other hand, I rather wish they'd admit that was the bind they are in rather than pretending that the best arrangements have been made.

Yeah, I think your energies are much better spent demanding a federal relief package than doing PR for indoor dining in a pandemic, but I guess that's why I'm not the mayor

As politics, for sure. As policy, I mean, neither works, of course, since the folks holding the federal relief money have made appallingly clear how willing they are to let most major urban areas collapse.

Direct relief for city governments is an obvious sticking point in negotiations but relief for businesses seems to me like the only thing virtually guaranteed to be in any stimulus bill (if one happens), and some of that could obviously go to restaurants.

The issue is, without some relief for city and state budgets, the trap for them still remains, even if the businesses stay in business, since they wouldn't generate any tax revenue.
