No, it's something they vaguely half-remember from high school world history and then inappropriately apply outside of its particular context. To be fair, I can get *most* of my students to remember Royal Legitimacy = (Chief Judge, Chief General, Chief Priest)

Which is really handy comparing across cultures, because if they remember that, you can give them a different system and play 'find the roles of kingship.' As with a Greek polis, or the Roman republic.

I am waiting - it hasn't happened yet - for a very clever student to recognize that the United States shouldn't have a chief priest, but we absolutely do in practice it and it is the President, no matter the party of the incumbent.
