The PRC gets very upset when groups in liberal democracies criticize the PRC. Look at the response to the NBA or Activision-Blizzard. I'm not sure why we wouldn't expect those demands to censor speech to become stronger if we leave PRC to be a regional hegemon.
But it seems like some of those relationships are becoming substantively more strained now. Saudi isn't going to be happy about Biden moves towards Iran. Erdogan's Turkey increasingly has divergent interests from the USA.

that's not a 'spread democracy' argument, but it does seem that in the long run, the USA's most stable and valuable partners have been the ones that democratized. democratic black-sliding has instead created non-ideological issues (Turkey, Hungary, etc)

That's not because of political democracy. It is because national interests are shifting in a dynamic world. The US will continue to get closer to India, for e.g., even as it becomes less democratic.

To be clear, I am not arguing that the USA can never work with non-democracies, but that the track record with democracies seems much better, overall (albeit, small sample size, since so many modern democracies are so young).
