@BretDevereaux I loved the Sparta series. Can you share where the claim that Sparta was really five villages came from? https://acoup.blog/2019/08/16/collections-this-isnt-sparta-part-i-spartan-school/ … . Everything I've found says four villages or city-state.
I'm counting Amyclae, which wasn't one of the original four but added subsequently, under Teleclus according to Pausanias (mid-700s). It's generally counted as one of the five traditional Spartan villages by the classical period.

While including Amyklai among five villages is, I think, still the communis opinio, I should note that there is not universal agreement. Nigel Kennell, I think, in particular has argued against it.
