Dear my students and all future students and also the general public: if you aren't sure if you should use 'social' or 'societal' in a sentence you should use 'social.' Use 'social.' Are there times when one should use societal? Probably. Is this one of them? No.

Is this like "Marxian" vs. "Marxist"?
There is actually more of a clear distinction there. Things are 'Marxist' which derive from Marxism (the philosophical/political school of thought) whereas things which derive from Marx but are not necessarily part of Marxism writ-large are 'Marxian.'

To be far, the number of cases where you'd use Marxian rather than Marxist are, I think 1) extremely few and 2) very technical in places where, say, Marxist economics is not quite the same for fidgety technical reasons as Marxian economic analysis.
