Absolutely one of those words where students believe the difference is "societal is when you are smarter and your paper gets a higher grade"
Dear my students and all future students and also the general public: if you aren't sure if you should use 'social' or 'societal' in a sentence you should use 'social.' Use 'social.' Are there times when one should use societal? Probably. Is this one of them? No.

Is this like "Marxian" vs. "Marxist"?

There is actually more of a clear distinction there. Things are 'Marxist' which derive from Marxism (the philosophical/political school of thought) whereas things which derive from Marx but are not necessarily part of Marxism writ-large are 'Marxian.'
