Hmm. I am torn here. On the one hand, I think comprehensive exams will a needed purpose in ensuring that someone has the necessary grasp of the field at large. On the other hand, they are absolutely conducted in a way that is massively unnecessarily stressful.

Yes, I’m totally with you here. Honestly, I think how exams are conducted in general have this problem. They do not replicate any realistic situation in any discipline. Reference materials are always on-hand, and there’s no arbitrary time limit. Also, collaboration is the norm
