Yeah, I was rather struck by that. I could understand if they, for gameplay reasons, created the option for a do-no-harm pillager (whatever that means), but actively requiring it in gameplay is...it's an interesting choice. Also, boy isn't 9th century England really empty?

Good thing there aren't any local farmers that are being displaced from their land by our new settlement right here. Just nice and empty. Because that's how video-game colonialism works. Just some nice, resource-rich empty land that absolutely no one lives on.

it's interesting comparing it to Expeditions: Viking, which (like the previous one, about the Spanish in Aztec territory) doesn't shy away from depicting the reality while letting you play in a variety of styles.

Yeah, while I am enjoying Valhalla and I enjoyed Odyssey, I think the 'cleaned up' history is now the Ubisoft house style, which extends to many things (sure are a lot of people in 9th cent. England who are surprisingly accepting of foreigners and non-traditional life choices!)

Which I think, for the entire series - and actually for a lot of other products (Watch Dogs, esp.) - cuts to the weakness of Ubisoft's general approach to writing/storytelling. They like 'edgy' topics, but functionally never have the courage to actually say anything with them.
