I am also getting really tired by the apparently widespread assumption that being a military historian - or even just military history enthusiast - in any period qualifies someone to speak on Greece and Rome.
That is just baffling. I'm not sure which I find more frustrating, the 'barbarization' bit, where I know where it is coming from but it's shop-worn and overdone, or the conscription-and-taxes bit, where I just have no idea what the author is even talking about.

Do folks think ancient history is a particularly accessible field? I mean, it isn't the least accessible field - I look at folks like Chase and Andrade with their gunpowder studies that require half a dozen languages with awe - but it sure seems like *less* generally accessible.
