Basically always captured in the wild. In the second post in that series, I explain the barriers towards a breeding program for war elephants. As far as we know, no self-sustaining war elephant breeding program was ever managed. Elephant corps were sustained by capture.
fascinating! are there any other working animal populations that have been sustained exclusively through capture in the same way?
Not that I know of, but I'm not an expert in these things.
