In addition to hunters, maintaining elephants required mahouts, riders, trainers, feeders, attendants and even more. For hunting, training, feeding, it was a huge effort to keep war elephants. Basically always captured in the wild. In the second post in that series, I explain the barriers towards a breeding program for war elephants. As far as we know, no self-sustaining war elephant breeding program was ever managed. Elephant corps were sustained by capture.
