My suspicion is that the Romans didn't have twitter, but it is an argument from silence.

Herodian's *wild* history of the years 235-238 gets pretty close to that vibe, especially with the first two Gordians and the Senate making wild overreactions to dim rumors and then being immediately caught flat-footed.
