B5 benefits from having a single writer and a planned 5 season story arc (even though the possibility of cancelation kinda fucked things up). Really makes for some great payoffs, but also suffers a bit from the lack of diverse input
It also just straight up has better space battles. Only BSG (reimagined) really ever matches the awe that is B5 S3E10 "Severed Dreams' in terms of a space battle that both looked cool but also had huge emotional stakes.
I didn't see it until recently so it took me a bit to get past the video game cutscene effects, but I think I agree they are engaging
Oh, it's a product of its time for sure. Those effects were ground-breaking when they first appeared. But I'm often surprised at how well a lot of it holds up. The big thing is that the story is there and the effects exist to serve the story, not the other way around.
