Oh. I assumed there would have been a chunky previous section on Etruria for all of the Etruscan focus they put in there. Without that, yeah, this is just going to be terribly confusing to students.
It probably would have been much better to just go with something like, "Rome sat on a cultural crossroads in an Italy which was, at the time, home to many diverse peoples who spoke a number of languages. Roman culture drew influences from many of these peoples."
