The pics on the Firesides are always pretty self-deprecating.

I appreciate that your political argument is based on informing readers of something you know that they probably don't (as opposed to a typical endorsement, which comes with no real new information).

Thucydides Book 3 and then Andrew Wolpert, Remembering Defeat: Civil War and Civic memory in Ancient Athens (2002), decent places to start.

Well, that won't cause any controversy. FWIW, I think Biden as he was a decade ago would be the man we want here. Maybe he still is. I'll back him over Trump. But the rest of his party is a lot less compromising, and even old Joe is making some scary noises(e.g., court packing).
-
But more broadly, I do think finding some compromises is a key goal. I don't know where to start in terms of DC issues, but in our regular lives, we need to reach across partisan divides, and make friends all over. Gaming groups, sports teams, co-workers, etc. Humans. Like us.

I have been to two classes of TJF, one on Roman Republic and one on Greek society. In both classes he expressed the same thoughts as yours: self-governing communities can be fragile, a bad precedent will shake the norms/conventions of the politics and lead to destructive results.

Is there a way to preserve democracy that does not require us to endlessly capitulate to right-wing demands and never push back?
-
If there is, It's certainly not endlessly capitulating to left-wing demands.
