Honestly, what needs to happen is for someone to write a revised synthesis of the orthodox view, resolving WWoW's flaws and providing a more up-to-date contrast with the evolving 'heterodox' view on hoplites. But WWoW-but-fixed won't get you tenure, so...

Orthodoxy is dead. It cannot be fixed. But attempting to do so anyway may well get you tenure at Hillsdale College or the Hoover Institute.

The fact that there has been no new research developing 'orthodoxy' since about 1995, and no scholarly defences of it since 2013, suggests that Krentz and Van Wees' revisionist view has indeed become the communis opinio among experts.

It would, except that, at least in my experience, that's not what you get if you buy a round of drinks at SCS/AIA. What you get is a lot of people who are deeply unconvinced, but have their own research projects and don't want to waste time rehashing an old debate.
