where do they come from? is it, like, some 30s film thing that became established
-
I think so? I've never seen it tracked down. It's not ancient, to be sure - they are nowhere on Roman statuary, relief, fresco, anywhere. We have a lot of pictures of Romans in various levels of formal and informal dress. No leather bracers that I can recall.

And if it is pre-Roman/pagan Britannia ... then add the dark filter, racing clouds, and ravens.

And lots of random clothing with big bits of raw fur but also probably lots of open-chest vests despite - and I have this on good authority - the fact that a fur vest without a shirt, coat or cloak might get rather cold in an English winter.

How about Romans wearing leather cuirasses/armor?
-
Generally no. Caesar's soldiers used improved textile or leather defenses in siege works, but otherwise there just isn't any evidence for this on any significant scale for the Romans in basically any period.
