Clearly something I need to read. To what degree does it engage with the 'military revolution'/gunpowder scholarship though? "There's no reason why Europe" is a bit different from 'There's no reason why Europe except gross military superiority brought about by <pick thesis>'

JAL isn’t so much interested in the “Rise of the West” question as much as she’s trying to undermine/complicate Wallerstein’s world systems theory (which is euro-centric and modernist). She’s arguing that a world systems exist earlier (and is focused on 13thC).
