The school I work for was planning in February or early March for it. I don't think the wider university was.

Yeah, really. I was stocking my pantry and freezer "just in case" in mid-February, but didn't say much out loud other than to my wife. I was thinking of going to my management in mid-March when it looked like we weren't going to get WFH, but they acted faster than I did.

There's a social norm of sorts that we're supposed to believe that the powers that be know what they're doing, and so we all feel kind of silly second-guessing them. If the pandemic has taught me anything it's that we can't do away with it fast enough.

I don't actually think that is the right lesson to take here. I think the right lesson to take is that people decided a 'outsider' could 'drain the swamp' of all of those experts and still lead effectively. They were wrong.
