Footnotes for comments that a reader might be curious about, endnotes for references to source material that just break the flow.
Oh no, never use both footnotes and endnotes. That just gets terribly confusing. Just use footnotes. Endnotes basically only exist because publishers think footnotes will scare away the easily frightened general reader.

Not that confusing if you use different symbols. Stars for footnotes, numbers for endnotes. It's possible I'm weird here, but that's always been a strong preference of mine. I hate flipping to the end for text, and references in the body are clutter.

But it's possible we're reading different works. I'm thinking of the more popular-focused nonfiction, not hard academic stuff.
